The Democrat-led committee cannot bring charges, but only make recommendations to the country’s Justice Department.
In the United States, the House of Representatives committee investigating the attack on the House of Representatives will vote on Monday on whether to nominate the former president Donald Trump against the criminal charge of sedition.
Tells about it the American newspaper Politico (you will switch to another service), which sources say the panel will vote on at least three possible charges against Trump. The other two counts are obstruction of justice and conspiracy to mislead the United States government.
The committee cannot bring charges itself, but it can make recommendations to the country’s Ministry of Justice.
The committee consists of nine members of the House of Representatives. Seven of them are Democrats and two are Republicans.
The Ministry of Justice is already investigating Trump’s actions
The committee’s investigations have focused on the events of January 6 in Washington in 2021. At that time, Trump’s supporters rushed to the US Congress with the aim of preventing Joe Biden assuming the presidency.
The Justice Department is already investigating Trump’s role in the attack on Congress and is not bound to follow the House committee’s recommendations. The committee is scheduled to release its final report on Wednesday.
According to Politico, it is unclear whether the report will possibly recommend bringing charges against Trump as well as other individuals.
Trump considers the investigation a hoax
A spokeswoman for the House committee has not commented on Politico’s information. Trump’s press officer Steven Cheung has criticized the committee’s plans.
– In the committee on the sixth day of January, Trump’s opponents held show trials. They are a stain on the history of this country, Cheung commented in the press release.
– This clowning about justice has been nothing more than a documentary project by Hollywood producers that mocks the intelligence of Americans and makes fun of our democracy, Cheung continued.
