The International Ski Federation (FIS) decided on Wednesday that men and women will compete in the World Cup on equally long distances starting next season. For the World Cup, the situation was still open, and the decision is due in May 2023.

The World Cup tours next season are sprint, 10 miles, 20 miles and 50 miles. The combination race is 20 kilometers (10 + 10 km). Travel for men and women at the World Championships and the Youth Olympic Festival was also harmonized.

The FIS said on its website that approval for equally long ski trips received 57 percent of the vote. The FIS described its decision as historic. At the same time, the umbrella organization said the main argument against unifying travel was related to TV broadcasts, as women ski the same trips slower than men.

The decisions now taken still require the approval of the FIS Council on 26 May. So far, the longest distance for women has been 30 and for men 50 kilometers. There has also been a difference in the length of combination races.
