Almost two meters of snow, not enough plowing equipment

Based on the US media, the situation is worst in the western parts of the state of New York, where the heavy snowfall began on the night between Thursday and Friday.

News channels CNN (switch to another service) and ABC (you switch to another service) describe the situation in the area as a “historic blizzard”.

In many places, more than six feet or 180 centimeters of snow has already accumulated and more snowfall is expected. Roads have been closed and flights cancelled.

The most snow has accumulated in the city of Buffalo, where the plowing equipment does not want to keep up with the heavy snowfall.

77 inches or 195 centimeters of snow was measured at the stadium of the Buffalo Bills team, which plays in the NFL league of American football.

Buffalo Bills posted a picture on Twitter (you’ll go to another service) from the snow cover of their stadium.

People had to be rescued from the snow

Heavy snowfalls are not unusual in the Great Lakes region. Moisture rises from the ice-free lakes into the air, which, when there is a suitable wind, falls to the ground near the shore as snow. The same phenomenon is currently bringing snow from the Gulf of Finland to southernmost Finland.

The city of Buffalo is also used to a lot of snow, but now the situation is described as exceptional.

of The Washington Post (you are moving to another service) according to this, it is possibly the most serious snowstorm in the region in almost ten years.

Governor of New York State Kathy Hochulin according to the Washington Post, 280 people have had to be rescued from the blizzard.

According to Lahti, at least two people are said to have died while working in the snow, possibly from heart attacks.

US National Weather Service (NSW) describes (you switch to another service) weather phenomenon currently underway as historically powerful.

A state of emergency has been declared in Buffalo, Orchard Park and Hamburg due to snow chaos, ABC says.
