A historian explains what makes a Clint Eastwood war film so great

Films On the subject of war, historians often gasp. Battles are depicted incorrectly or inaccurately and lack historical accuracy. However, things are different with a Clint Eastwood film.

What film is it about? We’re talking about Letters from Iwo Jima by Clint Eastwood. This film is from 2006 and tells of the historic Battle of Iwo Jima in the Pacific War. US troops stormed the island of the same name and fought against the Japanese defenders.

In the end, all warring parties suffered heavy losses, but only a fraction of the Japanese forces in particular survived. The battle was thus won by the Americans.

Clint Eastwood, who works as a director in addition to his acting, shows the battle from two sides. In Letters from Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective, and in another film called Flags of Our Fathers from the American perspective. This is quite unusual for Hollywood, as usually only your own perspective finds space on the screen.

But the effort paid off, at least from the point of view of historians. They particularly praise Letters from Iwo Jima as a very good war film. A series by Steven Spielberg has also received similar praise.

“An accurate representation”

What makes the film so good? In a video from Insider on YouTube, historian John McManus looks at scenes from various war films and rates them on a scale of 0 to 10. He has a lot to complain about in some of the examples, but Eastwood’s two films receive praise.

Letters from Iwo Jima in particular is very authentic when it comes to recreating the details of the battle. The historian highlights the tunnels shown in which the Japanese troops entrenched themselves. These tunnels stretched around 27 kilometers across the entire island.

According to the historian, the films’ great strength is that they do not tell a one-sided story, but rather show both perspectives. In this way, a better understanding of the events of that time can be achieved from today’s perspective and “an accurate representation” is created.

By the way, the historian gives the films 10/10 and 9/10 points. This makes them a duo worth seeing that is unparalleled within the genre.

The two films received numerous Oscar nominations, and Letters from Iwo Jima even won the award for best sound editing. Clint Eastwood has added two more good entries to his work. A great inspiration for the director, however, is a much older film: Clint Eastwood raves about the best western he has ever seen – but hardly anyone knows the film
