A grossly underestimated sci fi masterpiece that disturbs you with 3

Steven Spielberg has given us many outstanding blockbusters. There is no doubt about it. However, there are some works in his oeuvre that often fall under the tablewhen it comes to his best. One of them is 2005’s War of the Worlds, the remake of HG Wells’ sci-fi classic of the same name.

War of the Worlds rarely appears on Spielberg leaderboards, although it definitely belongs there. Few filmmakers can do that terrifying blockbuster show. At first glance, War of the Worlds looks like a classic sci-fi film, but then the horror begins to emerge.

  • Today on TV: War of the Worlds airs tonight at 8:15 p.m. on VOX. The repeat will follow on Friday at 10:05 p.m. Alternatively, you can currently stream the film with a subscription to WOW.
  • Scary science fiction film: Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds gets under your skin

War of the Worlds moves effortlessly between different genres and mixes elements of the disaster and monster film with the two mentioned, not to mention a nasty survival thriller. The Steven Spielberg of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET is hard to spot here.

Once the tripods emerge from the earth, Ray (Tom Cruise) and his family (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin) begin a struggle for survival, that of Spielberg ruthlessly in scene is set. Three scenes in particular are memorable for their graphic imagery and the eerie story behind them.

  • The river of corpses: On the way to Boston, Ray and his kids make a quick stop at a river. At first he seems calm and listless. Suddenly, more and more corpses appear, which make us understand the enormous extent of the alien invasion.
  • The Ferry Massacre: The next shock follows when crossing the Hudson at night. In a nerve-wracking moment of suspense, Spielberg shows how people almost tear each other apart in order to get onto the rescue ferry. And then the ship is simply sunk by two tripods.
  • The Blood Fields: As soon as we survive the ferry massacre, we find ourselves in a basement with the psychopath Harlan (Tim Robbins). But that’s not the scariest thing. Ray is shocked to discover that the invaders are gutting living people and spraying their blood across the landscape. They practically fertilize the planet until it is overgrown by a red plant.
  • Beyond that, War of the Worlds has many haunting moments. John Williams’ soundtrack alone is one Symphony of Discomfort. And then there’s the unforgettable peanut butter sandwich scene, in which Tom Cruise delivers one of his best acting performances ever.
