Atiq Ahmed, who was killed on Saturday, had been charged with numerous charges over the years, including kidnapping, murder and extortion.
The Indian television audience had to witness a shocking situation on Saturday evening, when a former Indian politician sentenced to prison for kidnapping Atiq Ahmed was shot dead in the middle of a live television interview. Ahmed’s brother was also killed in the shooting in Prayagraj town Ashraf.
In the video images of the incident that have spread, the police escort the handcuffed brothers to health checks, while the journalists who arrived at the scene ask Ahmed questions. Just days earlier, Ahmed’s teenage son had been shot dead by the police.
One of the journalists who arrived asked Ahmed if he could attend his son’s funeral.
– They didn’t agree to take us there, so we didn’t go, Ahmed answered.
Those words were his last, as at the same moment three men pretending to be journalists pull out handguns and shoot the brothers at close range, as both men fall lifeless to the ground.
The situation quickly turns into complete chaos. However, the shooters surrender quickly, as there were dozens of police officers escorting the prisoners to the hospital. According to the police, the shooters had arrived on motorcycles.
Before entering politics, Atiq Ahmed was known as an influential mafia boss. Ahmed had been charged with kidnapping, murder and extortion over the years. In March, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping.
