Terminator: Genisys is the fifth part of the film series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The SF film is considered a flop, but it actually performed well. At least at the box office.
The sci-fi film Terminator: Genisys was released in July 2015, directed by Alan Taylor. Despite casting “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke alongside Schwarzenegger in the role of Sarah Connor, the film failed to convince audiences.
However, it was still a success at the box office. And in 2015, revenue from US cinemas was not responsible for this.
Fourth-biggest opening for a US film in China
Where was the film a financial success? Although Terminator: Genisys failed to draw many audiences to theaters in the United States, the film apparently enjoyed success overseas. James Cameron’s work scored the fourth-biggest opening for a US film in China in 2015. After its premiere, the film grossed $27.4 million from 25,000 locations in China. (Source: variety.com)
According to IMDb, Terminator: Genisys grossed a total of $440,603,537 (approximately €400,023,951) worldwide. However, only about a fifth of the income, namely $89,760,956, comes from the USA and Canada.

What is criticized about the film? On Rotten Tomatoes, Terminator: Genisys has an audience rating of just 52%, on IMDb the film has a ranking of 6.3/10 with a total of around 289,000 reviews. One criticism is that Terminator: Genisys “treads on the dusty skeletons of the forefathers it slaughtered for this purpose.” (Source: Rotten Tomatoes)
In addition, the Terminator series has “forgotten what made Terminator and Terminator 2 so great.” Terminator: Genisys is also “unnecessarily complicated by so many time shifts that even a passionate fan of the series has to reluctantly admit that its future is behind it .”
Emilia Clarke said about Terminator: Genisys that she was “relieved” that she didn’t have to make another film, according to CinemaBlend. Filming was not a pleasant experience.
Arnold Schwarzenegger believes that Terminator: Genisys and its sequel, Terminator: Dark Fate, are not a worthy conclusion to the series. You can find out more about this from our colleagues at Moviepilot.
