The legends of King Arthur and his knights have been brought to the silver screen countless times. On Netflix: The Green Knight creates a unique fantasy nightmare
Like the original Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Green Knight tells of a momentous event in King Arthur’s (Sean Harris) court. A fantastic figure in knight’s armor (Ralph Ineson) calls on the nobles of the Round Table to to deal him a fatal blow with the sword. If he survives, in a year he will do like for like.
Young Gawain complies and decapitates the intruder. But he only puts his head back on, reminds his opponent of the agreement and disappears. A year later, Gawain has to keep his word. And gives up a journey that will test his knightly morals at every turn.
Director David Lowery (A Ghost Story) casts the old legend in haunting images that reinterpret the saga between fantastical figures and medieval filth. When Gawain is haunted by visions of his own wickedness, he encounters giants and finally faces the green knight’s axe, a fantasy realm full of small magical moments and disturbing nightmares comes to life.
