A €60 game on Steam runs much better on the PS5 than on a €3,200 laptop that costs six times the console

The game “Last of Us” started on the PC with technical problems. A tester viewed the game months later on an expensive notebook. And his conclusion is anything but positive. Because although he verifiably owns high-end hardware, the game is anything but smooth.

In the spring of 2023, Last of Us, celebrated on the PlayStation, was released on the PC, but it rained bad reviews: Because although the story and gameplay were also convincing on the PC, the game offered a terrible performance: The game is now at 58% on Steam positive reviews from more than 20,000 ratings. Nevertheless, a number of players are still complaining about problems.

Dave Meikleham from Tom’s Guide has now tested the game again 3 months after the release and explains that the game still runs worse on the latest PC technology than on Sony’s own console.

The PC version is still plagued by severe stuttering

what are the problems Meikleham explains in his article that he played The Last of Us Part 1 on a 3,200 euro ASUS notebook:

  • The game now runs solidly, but is unspectacular on PC hardware
  • Even the current, patched version of the game still jumps between 50 and 80 FPS and doesn’t feel smooth. This would be annoying, especially if you were traveling with high-end hardware.
  • You can also have a lot of fun with the game if you can get used to the heavy stuttering.
  • He says: He has a gaming PC for 5,000 euros and a notebook for 3,200 euros at home. And the game would run worse on both systems than on the PS5, which would “only” cost 500 euros (via tomsguide.com):

And that’s the main reason I’m so angry about the PC version of The Last of Us Part 1: despite owning an incredibly expensive gaming rig, this port is demonstrably worse than the current PS5 remake.

    (…)

But it’s absurd that a $500 video game console should [Last of Us] consistently smoother than one of the most powerful gaming laptops that costs seven times the price of the PS5.

The game is still great, but the quality would suffer from the technical problems.

Last of Us 2023 is not a special case among PC games

PC gamers have been struggling with difficult releases and PC ports for the past few months. Because many games, such as Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, came out in a disastrous state at the time of release and were provided with updates for weeks.

And many players feel the same as Meikleham: I have a fast gaming PC with an expensive graphics card under my desk, but the game just won’t work properly. Although I have the better hardware on paper and paid more money for it.

Many now fear that such a weak release with Starfield could be repeated in September 2023. As a PC player, do you then get the worse version as an Xbox player again?

All major games are failing disastrously on Steam right now – gamers believe a great feature of graphics cards is to blame
