This diet recommended for its benefits health (particularly in the fight against cancer) And slimming would have the disadvantage ofincrease the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) and of double the risk of cardiovascular eventsaccording to’study conducted by English doctors presented on March 5, 2023 at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology. Concretely, these doctors compared the health of 305 English people who declared by questionnaire to follow a diet low in carbohydrates (25% per day) and high in fats (45% per day) – such as ketogenic – to that of 1,220 people with a standard diet. I’average age of the study population was 54 yearsof which 73% women. BMI of those following the keto diet was superior to others. The authors assessed theimpact of the ketogenic diet on lipid levels in the blood. After 12 years follow-upthey found that participants on the ketogenic diet had higher LDL cholesterol levels than those who did not (3.80 versus 3.64 mmol/L) and apolipoprotein B* (1.09 versus 1.04 g/L1).

Angina pectoris, infarction and increased stroke

Doctors then observed that 9.8% of participants following the keto diet had a heart problem (chest pain (angina pectoris), clogged arteries requiring stenting, heart attacks and strokes) vs. 4.3% among those with a conventional diet. “On average, cholesterol levels tend to rise on this diet, but the cholesterol concentrations of some people may stay the same or decrease, depending on several underlying factors”, nuanced the Dr Iulia Iatanauthor of the study. “One of our next steps will be to try to identify specific characteristics or genetic markers that can predict how a person may react to this type of diet.” In the meantime, remember that the official recommendation is dhave a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables every day and a moderate intake of sugars and fats.
