For some time now it has become increasingly common that early access to the game is one of the advantages of pre-ordering if you dig deep enough into your pockets. Role-playing game Avowed has now jumped on the bandwagon and is encountering some headwind.
What does Avowed offer? Avowed is a single-player RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. It will be released on February 18, 2024 on Steam, Battle.net and the Microsoft Store. The whole thing will also be playable on the Xbox Series X|S. The game will also be available for the official release for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
A trend that is not going down well
What’s the problem with that? Many see it as a questionable practice to demand additional money for a game that is actually ready at the time in order to supposedly be able to play earlier. This creates a kind of artificial exclusivity to encourage people to buy the more expensive variant.
In addition, the actual release takes place on a Tuesday – however, early access allows you to play on the Thursday of the previous week. This gives players the opportunity to use the weekend before the official release to play Avowed.
What does the community think about this? Obsidian Entertainment’s actions are met with outrage on social media. Fans are exchanging ideas on this topic in a thread on Reddit. The main opinion there is that many people do not support this approach and will therefore not pre-order the game.
Some also note that they would be able to understand this practice on the part of the developers if it were a multiplayer title where earlier access would also bring advantages in the game. Many also note that in their opinion the early access is the actual release day and they see the almost 90 € as the actual price for Avowed, which simply drops 5 days later.
A very similar discussion had already taken place when Diablo IV was released. At this point, the same strategy was adopted, where those who pre-ordered the more expensive variants received earlier access. However, this approach was abandoned for the release of the latest expansion, Vassel of Hatred, which was very well received by the community: Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred dispenses with a controversial advantage for pre-orderers and receives praise from players
