The fire broke out in a seven-story residential building in Vaulx-en-Velin shortly after 3 a.m. local time. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but the fire spread from the ground floors upwards to the rest of the building.

A total of fourteen people were injured in the fire. One of the injured received serious injuries. There were at least 170 rescuers fighting the fire. Two of them received minor injuries while fighting the fire.

French Minister of the Interior by Gérald Darman said on Friday morning that he had been in contact with the president Emmanuel Macron with due to an accident. According to Darman, there are several scenarios for the cause of the fire, and the exact cause is currently being investigated.
