Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa ran a new women’s world record at the Berlin Marathon.
Ethiopian Tigst Assefa broke the women’s world record by more than two minutes at the Berlin marathon. Assefa’s new world record time is 2.11.53.
of Kenya Brigid Kosgein 2:14.04, run in Chicago in 2019, was the previous world record time.
After Assefa, Kenya ran second in Berlin Sheila Chepkurui, who lost to the Ethiopian by almost six minutes with a time of 2:17:49. Third was Tanzania Magdalena Shauri at 2.18.41.
Assefa won the Berlin marathon last year as well.
29-year-old Assefa specialized in the 800-meter distance earlier in his career. His record on the trip is 1:59.24. He competed in the 800-meter track distance at the Rio Olympics 2016, among others, but did not make it past the preliminaries.
In 2018, Assefa switched to road trips. He ran his first marathon in March 2022 in Saudi Arabia. The time of the debut marathon was 2:34:01.
Assefa ran her next marathon in Berlin in September 2022, when she won with a time of 2:15:38. That time was the third fastest marathon time ever run by a woman. Assefa therefore improved the time between his first and second marathon by more than 18 minutes.
The Finnish record for marathon women is Alisa Vainio 2.27.26 run last winter in Spain.
Four of the Finnish men have run a harder marathon time than the women’s new ME time. Finland’s record is by Janne Holmén 2.10.46. In addition, they have barely come under Assefa’s time of 2.11.53 Francis Kirwa, Esa Tikkinen and Jukka Toivola.
A historic win for Kipchoge
In the men’s marathon, an ME man, Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge won in Berlin for a record fifth time. He crossed the finish line in 2:02.42.
Ethiopian running greatness Haile Gebrselassie won in Berlin four times.
Second place was taken by Kenya Vincent Kipkemoi (2.03.13) and third in Berlin ran Ethiopia Tadese Takele (2.03.24).
