A Christmas with Sixun! – The Epic of Black Music

For nearly 40 years, the Sixun group has been promoting musical eclecticism and the sharing of cultures. This Afro-European formation has never betrayed its convictions, nor its guideline, by instilling a spirit of openness in each of its compositions. The last albumUnixsityconfirms this desire for unity and assumed diversity. The universalist intention of these six joyful instrumentalists makes our radio Christmas sparkle and encourages us to promote listening to and respect for our differences on a planetary scale.

When Sixun was born in the heart of the 80s, France wiggled to the rhythms of what was then called the “Sono Mondiale”. Fusion is the key word and experiments of all kinds, magnified by technological progress, nourish the audacity of the most creative instrumentalists. The jazz-rock of fashionable formations, Weather Report, Steps Ahead or Spyro Gyra arouses the interest and, sometimes, the rejection of purists always quick to be indignant at the alteration of the acoustic sound in favor of a frantic race to unbridled inventiveness. It is in this colorful universe that six virtuosos from different backgrounds decide to join forces to try the adventure of inspired collegiality. The first album “Sleepless nighthits the bull’s eye and the band’s Afro-Caribbean-jazz tone embraces the open-mindedness of French society at the time.

Apart from the percussionists who have not ceased to twirl around the central core, the pillars have remained solid. Paco Sery (drums), Michel Alibo (bass), Jean-Pierre Como (piano), Alain Debiossat (saxophone) and Louis Winsberg (guitar) have been working for 4 decades to suggest a fraternal and serene vision of the world in music. Since 2005, it is the acrobat Stéphane Edouard who decorates with his jubilant percussive cadence the always vibrant compositions of his playmates.Unixsity» is no exception to the rule. The repertoire is furiously swing and demanding enough to remind us that these six troublemakers are, above all, serious musicians whose talent continues to amaze us.

If there were moments of pause in “The Epic” Sixun, weariness is certainly not the cause. Multidisciplinary artists, our six soloists have also developed personal projects over time. To dedicate oneself fully to Sixun therefore supposed to grant oneself recreational moments to rekindle the flame which had never wavered in the end. We were impatient to find this historic formation and our expectation is now fulfilled. “Unixsityinstantly reconnects with the explosive rhythms and thrilling harmonies of yesteryear. The palpable enthusiasm for this return to favor will necessarily be greeted by an impressive French and, hopefully, international tour. A first Parisian date has already been announced, it will be February 11, 2023 at New Morning in Paris. We look forward to cheering on our heroes who are giving us a very nice Christmas present on our airwaves this Sunday!
