A childhood marked by war

Born in Belgrade in 1987, Novak Djokovic lived closely the Kosovo war and the NATO bombings in 1999, before leaving his country for Germany and building his destiny as a tennis player. Very marked by this period, the world No. 1 often repeats that this tragedy made him stronger.

“We were powerless, fortunately we all survived and we all learned a great life lesson from this experience and this situation,” he explained in 2013. Also invited to comment on the situation in Syria, Djokovic also explained : “I am completely against any kind of weapons, any kind of airstrikes […] I’ve had experience of it, I know it doesn’t do anyone any good”.
