Israel and Lebanon have reportedly agreed on a proposal for a ceasefire, according to information to several media outlets.
On Tuesday, the agreement can be signed.
– Benjamin Netanyahu wants to get this through, so it seems that it will happen during the day, says Arne Lapidus, Expressen, on location in Tel Aviv.
On Monday, at least 31 people were killed in Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Lebanese authorities said.
During the night, attacks continued on both borders.
At the same time, several regional and international media are reporting that a ceasefire is very close.
– Before a truce, you usually rush with everything you have, to get the last shot before a cease-fire comes in, says Arne Lapidus, Expressen, on location in Tel Aviv.
“Are there those who oppose the agreement”
According to information, it seems likely that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will get a decision through the cabinet.
– It is a highly nationalistic government and there are always those who are a little further to the right who oppose this agreement, who believe that it is too early and who believe that Hezbollah is not eliminated yet. But Netanyahu wants to get this through, so it looks like it will happen during the day,” Lapidus said.
The agreement must include, among other things, a two-month “trial period” and there must be a ceasefire from day one. Israel must gradually withdraw from southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah must stay north of the Litani River, which is located three miles from the border.
– A committee of five countries, the United States, France, Lebanon and Israel, and another country will monitor the ceasefire.
Most important for Israel: A letter
But the most important thing for Israel is something that will not be in the agreement, says Lapidus.
– Namely, a separate letter between the US and Israel that gives Israel the right to strike whenever it wants if it believes that Hezbollah is violating the agreement.
Something that Hezbollah and Lebanon do not want to sign.
– Hezbollah has given their answer and the most important thing for them is that there will be a ceasefire. But they will not accept anything that offends Lebanon, like this letter from the United States, says Lina, a freelance journalist, on the ground in Beirut.
In Beirut, people are skeptical of the agreement.
– They do not believe that Israel will want to stop the attacks against Hezbollah. People don’t believe it will be followed, people don’t see this with much hope.
During Tuesday, Israel is expected to make a decision on a proposal.
