During Thursday, the government announced that there is a confirmed case of the new mpox variant clade 1 in Sweden.
But the former state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell currently sees no major risk of the spread of infection in the country in an interview with DN.
– But that requires that the affected countries in Africa get the resources they need. It is very important. For now there is a reasonable chance to get things sorted and stopped before it gets any worse. We already know that there can be a potential in outbreaks like this, he tells the newspaper.
In addition, it is difficult to assess how dangerous the new variant is as there is not enough data, according to Tegnell, who has extensive experience in infection control work in Africa.
– What we know is that very many children have been infected and even died from this variant. But if something happened, either with the routes of spread or with the contagiousness, we don’t know yet, he tells DN.
