Through films like the uncomfortable drug drama Requiem for a Dream or the intense psychological thriller/ballet horror Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky is considered a directing eccentric with a strong handwriting, who regularly alienates and upsets viewers with his works.
Extreme potential for disruption also owns his most recent film, mother!, for which he cast his then-partner Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role. If the grotesque marital drama gives even the slightest clue as to the relationship between the director and the actress, you have serious concerns (the two have since split).
But that’s mother! Netflix until July 31st stream, an immersive trip that spirals into insanity along with the main character.

mother! puts the viewer in the uncomfortable position of the main character
After still having a budget of over 100 million dollars for the Bible blockbuster Noah, Darren Aronofsky shot mother! with a comparatively manageable 30 million dollars. The plot of the film was discussed in advance much secrecy operated and no one really knew what Aronofsky’s new work would be about.
mother! confirms the impression of a mysterious, small heart project, whereby the film moves from the intimate observation of a slow marriage crisis to the more and more surreal apocalyptic hell trip increases, which should completely repel many viewers.
The story focuses on the unnamed couple, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. He’s a respected poet who seems to be in the midst of a creative crisis while she cedes the classic role of caring housewife.
From the beginning of his film, Darren Aronofsky creates one again through strange noises, enigmatic apparitions and mysterious omens uncomfortable moodwhich this time puts the viewer completely in the perspective of the female protagonist.
the claustrophobic close-ups constantly stick to Jennifer Lawrence’s face or follow what’s happening behind her back. So let mother! Become aware of how it feels when something inexplicable or unwanted intrudes where you actually feel safest.
mother! tipping over into complete madness with joy of interpretation
While the director stages his film for the most part as a concentrated psychological thriller, in which the perception of Jennifer Lawrence’s character falters with regard to increasingly extreme incidents, Darren Aronofsky then continues with a final third, which turns out to be a brutal frontal attack on the senses turns out.

mother!
The director throws Lawrence’s character into one martial fever dream, in which she almost literally has to endure the torments of hell. In addition, the entire film at some point allows for a wide variety of interpretations, through which mother! threatens to burst at the seams alongside the actual madness.
Is Aronofsky’s work a Meditation on the state of the earth, which is deliberately trampled underfoot by mankind? One Reflection on the artistic creative process, who tears interpersonal relationships into sheer madness due to the insurmountable egos of the creators? Or the nasty, completely detached one and, after Noah, again peppered with biblical references Deconstruction of private living conditions by public figures?
In mother! suddenly current grievances of political world affairs in the four walls of two people who are no longer perceptible as such by the finale at the latest.
This will mother! once more to the typical Darren Aronofsky film, between shrill madness, intimate intensity and excessive symbolism on the verge of self-parody compels every viewer to react. More disturbing than in mother! In any case, you will probably never see Jennifer Lawrence again.
