The mother jumped after the child on Thursday, when the ship was on its way from Poland to Karlskrona on the southern coast of Sweden.
The child who fell into the Baltic Sea yesterday from a passenger ship and his mother have died, Swedish media reports among other things Aftonbladet and Expressen.
Expressen says that it has received confirmation from the Polish police. The police also said that both the boy and his mother are Polish citizens.
Two people fell from the Stena Line passenger ship into the Baltic Sea on Thursday. The 7-year-old boy fell off the ship first, after which the mother jumped after her child.
The accident happened in the middle of the journey
The passenger ship Stena Spirit was on its way from Gdynia in Poland to Karlskrona on the southern coast of Sweden. It was about half way when the child fell into the sea. At that time, the ship was about 70 kilometers south of Öland.
Helicopters from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland participated in the rescue operation. It was also joined by four military coalition NATO ships and a US Coast Guard vessel that were on NATO exercises near the crash site.
About an hour and a half after the first alarm, the Maritime and Air Rescue Center reported that both those who had fallen had been picked up from the sea and taken to the hospital in Karlskrona.
