Studies on booster doses are increasing. Their effectiveness against infections, severe forms and today mortality due to Covid-19. As often, the data comes from Israel where booster doses have been authorized since the end of the summer. Scientists from Clalit Health Services followed 843,208 participants, of whom 758,118 received a third dose of Pfizer, five months after the previous one, and 85,090 who only have two doses of the same vaccine. The study, published in The NEJM, focuses only on people aged 50 and over.
A 90% reduction in mortality after the 3e dose
L’impact of mortality Covid-19 were compared between the group of “boosted” and the group of “non-boosted”. During the 54 days that lasted monitoring, 65 deaths were recorded in the boosted group for an incidence of 0.16 cases per 100,000 people. In the non-boosted group, 137 deaths were recorded an incidence of 2.98 cases per 100,000 people.
The risk of dying from Covid-19 for people who received a booster dose is 0.10 (95% CI: 0.07-0.14) compared to people having only the two doses. In other words, people vaccinated over the age of 50 with a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine, five months after the previous one, have a 90% lower risk of dying from Covid-19 than those who have only two. doses. Despite a rather short follow-up time, only 54 days, the scientists still observed a significant effect on reducing the mortality of the booster dose. What’s more, this result is only valid for the Pfizer vaccine.
