A 3 hour war movie masterpiece with 3 acting deities

In the 1970s, Michael Cimino was considered a prodigy director, before he drove an entire film studio into ruin in the early 1980s with Heaven’s Gate. However, with films like Going Through Hell, he proved that he was previously granted that status. The Intense war drama with a star cast and three hours in length runs on Monday evening on Arte.

Going through Hell unleashes the horror of war as a tragic drama

The story of Cimino’s epic revolves around friends Michael (Robert De Niro), Steven (John Savage) and Nick (Christopher Walken), who know each other from their jobs as steel workers. Together they go to war in Vietnam in 1968, where they are taken prisoner by the enemy. After they can escape and return home, they must as traumatized men in everyday life find their way.

Going through Hell looks like Cimino has combined three short films into one massive work. Along with acting gods like De Niro, Walken and Meryl Streep, his film is about the friendship between the main characters for an hour before they are sent into the pure hell of the Vietnam War.

Cimino’s film proves to be a clear anti-war film that follows obligatory action scenes focused on the protagonists’ shattered inner lives. As a result, Going Through Hell evolves into a painful, hard-to-carry character study of broken personalities who can only find peace by descending back into Hell from Paradise.

When is Going Through Hell on TV?

Michael Cimino’s war film masterpiece is brought to you by Arte on August 21, 2023 at 9:35 p.m aired without commercial breaks.
