A 3 hour masterpiece so good it feels like 3

Three gangster films are enough to familiarize the uninitiated with the genre. The Godfather 2, GoodFellas and Casino. The last one is by far the most underestimated in the group. And yet one gripping masterpiece to the bitter end.

On TV: A gory masterpiece about the mafia, murder and the end of a friendship

Ace Rothstein (Robert De Niro) is supposed to go to Las Vegas for the Chicago mob to raise and exploit gambling there. He’s doing just fine until his friend Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) comes to town and makes the lives of both men extremely dangerous with his hot-headed, stubborn manner.

This is an extreme simplification of the dramatic plot penned by master director Martin Scorsese (GoodFellas), who is working with De Niro on Casino for the eighth time. De Niro and Pesci deliver absolute brilliant performances and the gripping staging never lets up. 178 minutes of concentrated mafia epic fly by. And end in shock.
