A 20-year-old quest in WoW still inspires players today: “Everyone should have played it at least once”

World of Warcraft is full of quests. If you’re starting now, it’s almost impossible to catch up on all of them. But there are a few quests and series that are so good that veterans still remember them to this day.

Quests are an important part of any MMORPG, not only providing players with XP and rewards, they also serve two narrative purposes: telling the game’s story and leading players to new areas.

Many tasks in MMORPGs are pure “fetch quests”, i.e. collect 5 boar tusks, 3 wolf pelts or chop wood 12 times. Others have more depth and WoW even has a quest called The War Within that only “evil” characters can complete.

Hundreds of veterans have gathered on Reddit and thought about which quests from WoW history were the absolute best for them and which they would recommend to every player.

Not exactly a quest, but definitely one of the most memorable moments in WoW: The end of the Lich King from WotLK:

“No king reigns forever” – The end cinematic of Icecrown Citadel in WoW WotLK

You should definitely play these quests: In the comments of the thread, there are several recommendations that are somewhat… questionable. For example, one player says: “If you’re a Taurean, there’s this crazy quest where you have to collect 8 flowers.”

However, most users submit quests that actually tell a really strong story, such as:

  • The Legend of Stalvan, a quest from Classic about a dramatic love story. We already introduced the quest series in 2017 in our 3 epic quests that were forgotten.
  • The entire starting areas for the death knights and goblins. Here alone there are such strong stories or completely crazy situations that they are worth it. As a goblin, for example, you accidentally release Deathwing, it looks like… oops.
  • Drustvar as a whole area, especially if you’re into witches and the occult. Here, one user says: “Alliance Drustvar is the best zone in the entire game.”
  • The story of the blue dragons from Dragonflight, which is one of the best quests of all time even for MeinMMO demon Cortyn.
  • The story of Pamela Redpath, who no longer exists. You can only play her in WoW Classic.
  • Another personal recommendation is the Uncrowned quest line from the Rogues’ Hall of Fame in Legion. This later leads to a highly controversial quest in Dragonflight, but in general all of the Halls of Fame are really strong.

However, the undisputed best quest that players recommend is one about hidden intrigues, a kidnapped king and an evil dragon in a beautiful form.

“From the starting area to the first raid, this is what a quest series should be like”

The quest series “The Missing Diplomat” receives the most recommendations – or actually one of the first quests in the starting area for humans. Because that’s where the story begins:

  • As a human, you quickly get to know the Defias, but only as simple bandits and robbers.
  • Later in Westfall you learn that the Defias are actually well organized and apparently have good connections.
  • In the dungeon at the latest, there is the first explanation that the Defias were actually once a stonemason’s guild that built Stormwind.
  • The story then develops over many hours and areas, but suddenly ends at some point. A few levels later, you will get the quest line to unlock Onyxia’s Lair in Classic.

Only there will you learn the full extent of the story that you, as a human, touched upon back then: Behind the Defias’ betrayal and the war in the shadows is the last black dragon lady, Onyxia, who lived unnoticed in Stormwind as Lady Katrana Prestor.

You find out that none other than the King of Men himself has been kidnapped and that it was all orchestrated by Onyxia. The quest culminates in you and 40 other players going to the Dragon Lady’s lair and killing her. According to players, this is the “pinnacle of leveling experience.”

The quest is even continued later, albeit briefly and only for humans: When you pick up your heritage armor, the Defias are picked up one last time. Many quests and situations from World of Warcraft have stuck in the players’ memories, but not all of them are positive.
