John Daly is the golf world’s big favorite.
Not because he may still be at the highest level, but because of how he is on the track.
Just wait until you hear what he put in during the first round of the Major PGA Championship…
Before, it was not uncommon for golfers not to be the most well-trained. Instead, they could enjoy the good life, for example by smoking on the track, and not infrequently take a berry after the competitions. And it was also more the rule than the exception that there was a small beer belly on the golfers, even at the best in the world.
A real icon
But golf has changed enormously in the last 20 years. Tiger Woods came in and fundamentally changed the sport, and now golfers are at least as well trained as in other sports. The world elite spend countless hours in the gym, and it does not party at all to the same extent, especially not near the track. But there are still those who live in the old school.
John Daly has never hidden that he likes the good in life, and even though he is starting to get older, he still holds on to the absolute world elite. This week, for example, he is in this year’s second major competition, the PGA Championship, but he still behaves exactly as he wants. Due to knee injuries, Daly gets an exception and sometimes gets to ride a golf cart, which is usually forbidden, and he treats the competition like any amateur golfer.
He chewed so much
Golf journalist Will Brinson accompanied Daly throughout his opening round of the major competition, making sure to follow exactly what Daly put in during the competition. And this is really absolutely wonderful reading.
During the competition, Daly smoked 21 cigarettes. He drank twelve (!) Cans of Cola Light – and ate six packs of sweets, from the M&M brand. It was hot during the competition too, but think that Daly poured in water, you are wrong.
According to Brinson, Daly drank zero (!) Sips of water during his round. So how did it go then? Yes. Daly went around on two over par – the same score as, for example, Henrik Stenson. In addition, he went around two strokes better than the best of all time, Tiger Woods, and he is only seven strokes from the lead. What an icon!
