Mark Cavendish continues to live a second youth in the peloton and the Briton does not want to waste this new opportunity to continue being in the cycling elite. For this reason the ‘Missile of Man’ confirmed to La Gazzetta dello Sport and other media present at the Giro d’Italia that he wants to continue in the professional peloton.
Cavendish assured that he still has two years in which he sees himself capable of continuing to add successes in cycling. “I want to extend my career for at least two more years. It’s not that I want to continue riding a bike. I feel like I can be competitive for at least two years. It may be more, but for at least two years I can continue at the top.”
Another of the unknowns surrounding Cavendish is whether the Briton will run the Tour de France despite the fact that Patrick Lefevere wants to bet on Fabio Jakobsen to compete in the sprints in the Grande Boucle. “If he could win one more stage, he would be happy. If he could win ten more stages, he would be happy too. The number is really not a factor that matters to me, that’s the truth. Of course I would love to race in the Tour de France, but I am a professional and as such I will do what the team asks of me. You know I’m always ready to go, but it’s not my decision. It’s not something you think about or stop thinking about. I just do my job.”
Cavendish ends his contract with Quick-Step this season and it is not yet known if the two years he wants to continue racing will be played in Quick-Step or if, on the contrary, he prefers a change of scenery to face the last seasons of his career.
