Dendrology: what is it?

Dendrology what is it

Dendrology (from the Greek dendron signifying tree, and logos meaning speech, science) is the study of trees. This discipline includes in particular:

  • recognition and morphology from trees (shape, twigs, leaves, fruits …);
  • the classification of cash ;
  • the distribution and distribution of species (density, ecology populations, evolution of environments and resources);
  • biology and the study of pathogens (anatomy, ecophysiology, growth and architectural development of the tree, genetic, diseases, study of insects xylophagous or phyllophagous …);
  • the operation and management of ecosystems foresters (interactions with weather, soil, vegetation, decomposers, herbivores and humans);
  • the forest management and monitoring ;
  • the use of wood.

Dendrometry is a sub-discipline of dendrology and focuses on the measurement of trees (size, height, shape, age, bark thickness …) and their population (slenderness, tree density, covered area, distribution, volume on foot…)

Dendrology is involved in many areas: forestry, wood industry, conservation of biodiversity, management of spaces, improvement of plants, customs, trade (prevention of illegal imports), certification, fire prevention, etc.
