Nearly a thousand Ukrainian soldiers have since Monday given up and left the besieged steelworks Azovstal in the bombed-out port city of Mariupol, Russia’s defense ministry said on Wednesday. The soldiers from Mariupol are taken to a former penal colony in the Russian-controlled city of Olenivka.
What will happen to the captured Ukrainian soldiers is still unknown. In the Duma’s Russian parliament yesterday, the President called them Nazis and said that they should under no circumstances be handed over to prisoners.
According to Ukraine, however, negotiations on prisoner exchange are underway.
