The amendment regarding wheat export was published in the Official Gazette of India. The world’s second largest wheat producer, India, has banned wheat exports, which it sees as a threat to food security.
With the change in wheat exports, it is aimed to control the wheat price, which has increased by at least 40 percent in global markets since the beginning of the year, within the country.
It was pointed out that the increase in wheat prices threatens the food security in India, neighboring and vulnerable countries.
THE WAR HOLD THE WHEAT OF UKRAINE, THE HEATS OF INDIA
The attack of Ukraine, known as Europe’s granary, by Russia, brought wheat prices to the highest level in 14 years, while approximately 40 million tons of grain are expected to be exported in Ukrainian warehouses.
The tension between Russia and Ukraine, which has an important role in world wheat exports, caused the wheat supply to be adversely affected, the upward pressure on prices to continue, and the wheat exports from Ukraine to come to a standstill.
EYES LOOKED TO INDIA
Since the Russia-Ukraine War has already interrupted the global wheat supply, many countries have turned their eyes to India to close the wheat deficit.
However, the extreme heat that was effective in India, the world’s second largest wheat producer, affected the agricultural sector and aggravated the supply problem by jeopardizing the crop yield.
In the country, where the early heat wave had a negative impact on agriculture, wheat yield had decreased considerably due to the March temperatures reaching the highest levels since 1901. (AA)
