This is the deadliest attack against Syrian government troops since the truce concluded in March 2020 under the aegis of Russia and Turkey.

The attackers operated from an area where the Turkish army is present, which deploys hundreds of soldiers and observation posts in the provinces of Idleb and Aleppo, controlled by rebels close to Ankara and groups jihadists.

This ambush took place five days after the death of six rebels in an attack by the Syrian army in the province of Hama, bordering Idlib.

The rise in tensions on these relatively calm fronts over the past two years coincides with the deterioration of relations between Russia and Turkey, due to the war in ukraine.

Ankara delivers armed drones to Ukrainian forces and has banned access to the Black Sea for Russian ships.

Russia has expressed its displeasure by resuming air raids on rebel-held areas.

In April, Russian planes launched several attacks on Idleb and the Syrian army shelled positions in the de-escalation zone.
