Highway 403 has reopened

Highway 403 in the Brantford area has reopened.

Ontario Provincial Police said early Tuesday that the highway had been cleared and the section between Highway 24 and Garden Avenue had reopened.

The highway was closed on Monday afternoon after a section of the overpass at Wayne Gretzky Parkway fell onto the road after it was damaged by a piece of construction equipment being transported along the highway.

“When the bridge was struck, a girder protecting the bridge was dislodged and fell on the highway below, resulting in the closure of all lanes of Highway 403,” Lee Alderson, senior issues adviser with the ministry, said in an email to The Expositor .

Alderson said the highway and the overpass were expected to reopen following the inspection and the removal of debris blocking the 403’s westbound lanes.
