Djevencio van der Kust started playing football at Zuidvogels in Huizen as a toddler. After the family moved to Amsterdam, he ended up at Zeeburgia, where he played until he was eleven, except for one season at another club. At Zeeburgia, which is known for its good youth training, he was scouted by Ajax, AZ and FC Utrecht. Ajax did not think he was good enough, after which the choice fell on FC Utrecht.
