Mathieu van der Poel won the first of the three Hungarian stages of the Tour of Italy (Giro), this May 6, 2022 in Visegrad. The Dutchman thus puts on the pink jersey of leader in the general classification of the Giro. He won in a suffocating sprint at the top of the final climb to the citadel (3.8 km at 5% average gradient) ahead of Eritrean Birnam Girmay, who very nearly signed a resounding feat for African cycling.
