Germany sued Italy before the United Nations because of the Nazi war crimes tribunals that continue to be opened in that country.
In the application made to the International Court of Justice, it is noted that despite a decision in 2012, Italy continues to allow these cases.
The said decision in 2012 grants immunity to the Federal Republic of Germany in the context of crimes committed during the Nazi era.
However, Germany has announced that 25 cases have been allowed since that year.
In some of these cases, the German state was ordered to pay compensation.
In 2008, the Italian Supreme Court decided to pay compensation to the families of 203 people killed by the Nazis in 1944.
Since that 1 million euro compensation case, the two countries have been facing each other on this issue.
Germany, on the other hand, argues that it has paid billions of euros in compensation since the war ended in 1945.
Germany asked for action
The reason for the new filing of the case before the UN is based on a decision to be taken by the Italian court on May 25.
The court will decide on the seizure of some immovable properties of the German state in Rome in return for compensation.
Among these buildings, there are cultural, historical and educational centers.
It may take years for the Court of Justice to decide on the case. However, Germany demanded that the sale of its assets in Rome be suspended until the final decision.
The International Court of Justice, located in the Netherlands, deals with legal issues between countries.
