President Pedro Castillo narrowly avoids new impeachment proceedings

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was forced to rush back from Ecuador by car on Friday, April 29. If he hadn’t reached the border before midnight, he would have run the risk of being deposed.

The Head of State was traveling to the town of Loja, 264 kilometers from the Peruvian border, to chair a binational Council of Ministers. He was supposed to fly home, but weather conditions prevented him.

The opposition had planned to launch impeachment proceedings for ” presidential vacation » against Pedro Castillo if it failed to reach Peru before midnight. The Peruvian Parliament gave the Head of State only 24 hours for his visit to Ecuador. The latter finally reached the Tumbes post at the border, just one hour before the deadline. If that hadn’t been the case, he would have violated the Peruvian Constitution which the president cannot ” leave the national territory without the authorization of the Congress or do not return there within the time allowed “.

Castillo in the face of opposition hostility and protests
