EU prepares customs response: will be robust

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that 25 percent tariffs will be introduced on cars manufactured outside the United States, starting on April 2. This decision has aroused strong reactions, from, among others, the EU and Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the decision as a “direct attack” and announced that Canada will decide on its response on Thursday.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regretted the decision and emphasized that the EU will seek solutions through negotiations, while at the same time determining their financial interests.

The answer will be robust

On Thursday, the Commission spokesman Olof Gill announces that the EU’s customs response will be robust and calibrated.

– We have received this announcement about cars. Next week we understand that a new set of measures from the United States, what they call their mutual tariffs, will come into force. We regret all this, but we are preparing for all this, says Olof Gill, reports Reuters.

– I cannot say exactly when our potential response to these not yet implemented measures will come, but I can assure you that it will be timely, that it will be robust, that it will be calibrated and that it will have the intended effect.
