In August 2024, the Gaming magazine Game closed and dismissed all employees. The magazine has existed since 1991, for many Americans it was their way to the world of video games. The website and the print magazine are now coming back three quarters of a year after the end. Behind the miracle there is a studio from Frankfurt in Germany and Neil Blomkamp, the director of District 9.
What is Game Informer and why is it so important for gaming? Game Informer was founded in 1991 and was a classic monthly gaming magazine in the print edition, just as the games star in Germany.
Game Informer was taken over by the Gamestop store in 2000. As a result, the magazine N rose of its awareness: the store chain advertised the magazine and it was in the many branches of the companies across the United States.
In the years afterwards, Game Informer had numerous exclusive stories from AAA games on his website, who hoped for an attention boost. At its wedding, the print magazine reached a circulation of 8 million.
But in August 2024, the now heavily crising company Gamestop closed the magazine Game Informer after 33 years and dismissed all employees. The edition from June 2024, number 368, was the last issue of the print magazine. There was only “Farewell” on the website. It was a blow for the employees and readers.
The new game by Neil Bonkamp, Off The Grid. He has now saved the magazine:

Gaming studio buys Magazin, stops all employees
This is the message now: The chief editor of the magazine reported on the revived website of the magazine that two insane things have happened in the past few months (via Gameinformer):
The work will now be started again, and the print magazine should also appear again. The editor -in -chief seems to be incredulous what happens:
The whole team. Seriously – I still have to pinch myself.
German gaming studio saves US magazine
Who is behind it? The rescuer of the magazine is the director Neil Blomkamp (“District 9”, “Chappie”).
Blomkamp co-founded the “Gunzilla Games” gaming studio in 2020 and works there as a Chief Creative Officer on “Off The Grid”, a free Battle Royale title.
Gunzilla Games is based in Frankfurt.
Game Informer says: The new owners have assured that she would keep out of Game Informers and that the editorial team should work 100 % independently.
This is how this is discussed: On Reddit you accept the news in a friendly manner:
“These are great news. I hope that the archive material will not lose over the years. There is real gaming history.”
But there are also some doubts:
The technology NFT has no good reputation among gamers.
Gaming magazine is saved against the trend
That is behind it: Due to its strong binding to the “Gamestop” store, Game Informer was not a magazine that was particularly critical of the gaming industry, but the exclusive stories were informative and unique in the media world. The drop was felt.
The decision to get the print magazine back now seems to be going against any current trend. Gaming magazines were recently in a consolidation phase, more of the magazines were set and placed. Therefore, this resurrection for the dismissed employees really resembles a miracle. Let’s see how things go here. Gaming page is bought by IGN, loses the last editor, sends nice greeting
