The Estonian Parliament has approved a bill that removes voting rights in local elections, including from the country’s extensive Russian minority and other citizens of non -European countries.
In Estonia, the voting rights of the local elections have so far been linked to a person’s residence permit in the country, ie also people who have no Estonian citizenship have been able to vote.
The bill still needs the approval of the President to enter into force. If this happens, the right to vote will be removed from about 80,000 Russian citizens living in Estonia.
