Europe is better in Counter-Strike than America

Many games discuss whether Europe or North America is the stronger region. In the case of Counter-Strike, Shroud has a clear answer.

Who is it about? Twitch streamer Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek is a former CS: GO and Valorant Profi, who is known to be very good in a wide variety of shooters.

  • On Twitch, Shroud has 11.1 million followers and had an average of 11,300 spectators at the same time in the past 6 months (via Sullygnome).
  • In Counter-Strike, Shroud and his team Cloud9 celebrated some regional successes in North America.
  • In 2024, Shroud presented the Shooter Specter Divide, in the development of which he was involved. But the developers announced the shutdown 7 months after the release.
  • Shroud’s greatest triumph is the ESL Pro League Season 4 finals in CS: GO. The success brought Cloud9 a prize money of $ 200,000. Now the streamer looked back on the success of Cloud 9 and is to decide that Europe is much better in Counter-Strike than North America.

From the top team in America to mediocre in Europe

What exactly does Shroud say? The streamer said on Twitch that Cloud9 was one of the top teams in North America, but only did quite well in Europe: “We were something like the best NA team, so we all gained na-things. And then we went to Europe and were okay.”

Afterwards he added that this was a success because the region is so strong: “To be okay in Europe was respectable because Europe is insane in Counter-Strike [gut] is.”

What is behind the statements of Shroud? Until 2017, Shroud played CS: Go for Cloud9 and was actually relatively successful – at least in North America.

  • Cloud9 was one of the best team in the region and won various smaller tournaments and qualification games for international competitions.
  • The regional proleague seasons also often ended Cloud9 on one of the top positions.
  • Internationally, however, European teams such as Astralis, Navi or Fnatic had the upper hand.
  • The Cloud9 team continued to change over the years. Shroud took a place on the replacement bench and a short time later ended his career as an active player. In 2020, Cloud9 then hired European players and competed in Europe for the first time at Pro League Season 13. There, however, the new line-up did not get beyond the 17th place.

However, Shroud should not be too frustrated that he and Cloud9 repeatedly lost to the stronger Europeans – after all, he still managed to build up a successful career as a streamer. And his account balance also helps him to calm down when he gets angry when playing: The shooter expert Shroud has found a remedy for freak on Twitch-but not everyone can afford it
