The University of Istanbul canceled, Tuesday, March 18, the diploma of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of the largest Turkish city and principal opponent of President Rece Tayyip Erdogan. The board of directors of the establishment considered irregular its transfer from a University of Cyprus-North in 1990, and therefore the diploma obtained in 1994. This decision, which aroused outcrop in the ranks of the opposition and in particular of the People’s Republican Party (CHP), constitutes a major obstacle to the presidential ambitions of the mayor of Istanbul.
