According to Deadline, the former TBBT showrunner spoke in the first episode of The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast that Penny in the first episodes of the sitcom too clichéd nowadays appears:
Even after the second pilot sequence we had to watch so many episodes before we started to understand that in Penny’s character there was a genius that we had not yet researched.
For Lorre, Penny’s personality mainly impresses with a strong quality that lacks the nerds in the Big Bang Theory:
It is a clichéd figure: the stupid blonde and we didn’t notice it. We did not immediately notice that they gave this story, this series, the other characters an intelligence that they did not have. An intelligence that was strange to them, one Intelligence towards people, relationships and family.
In the podcast, Lorre comments critically, but also grateful for the process. For him, it is the gift of a TV series that is successful to learn and find out more about them and the characters. In the course of the seasons, Penny developed into a much more complex personality.
