She explains that the classic signs of aging such as loss of appetite, fatigue or the difficulty of moving is well known, but that certain more subtle details can also reveal a significant degradation of their state of health.
According to her, any change in behavior or appearance must be taken seriously. A sudden weight loss, alteration of the coat, breathing difficulties or a change in its sleep habits can be early indicators of an underlying problem. She shares the example of a couple who contacted her for their cat’s home euthanasia, suffering from a serious kidney disease. During the consultation, the owner noticed a change in animals, which turned out to be crucial. The specialist explains: “It is quite common for cats with a kidney infection to have a particular breath.” Indeed, when the kidneys no longer filter the blood properly, toxins accumulate in the body. This condition, called uremia, then produces a recognizable odor, similar to ammonia. It can also be observed in dogs with advanced kidney failure.
In addition to this type of disease, other pathologies can also lead to changes in the smell of the breath of an animal. A oral infection, a tumor in the mouth, a liver disorder or even diabetes can cause olfactory changes.
