The voting numbers in the final vote were 54-46. Republicans have a fragile majority in the Senate with 53 seats.
The approval came just hours before the deadline, which was midnight American time, went out to approve the proposal and avoid a shutdown.
The proposal is now being forwarded to be signed by President Donald Trump.
Criticism of Schumer
The final vote-where it was enough with 51 yes votes-was preceded by a preliminary vote that required 60 senators to support the proposal.
The voting numbers there were 62–38. Ten Democratic Senators voted with their Republican colleagues, while Rand Paul as the only Republican voted no.
The budget was approved in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
The Senate’s minority leader Chuck Schumer belonged to the few Democrats who announced in advance that they intended to support the Republican’s proposals.
Schumer has been severely criticized by some other Democrats for the past 24 hours. In his defense, Schumer describes how a shutdown had been a gift to President Trump and his “terrible agenda”.
“Dysfunction and Chaos”
According to Schumer, Trump and Elon Musk, through the so -called efficiency body Dogge, would exploit a shutdown to “destroy crucial government operations at a significantly higher rate than now”.
But a group of members of the Democrats in the House of Representatives have urged the Senate Democrats to block the proposal to negotiate a better budget compromise with Republicans instead.
“The American people sent Democrats to Congress to fight Republican dysfunction and chaos,” 66 Democrats write in a letter to Schumer.
