Donald Trump has previously threatened to introduce more tariffs after his latest decision on steel and aluminum import taxes were met by countermeasures from both the EU and Canada. Now the president writes in a post on Truth Social that he wants to introduce 200 percent duties on European alcohol.
In response to Trump’s decision, the EU has reintroduced tariffs on US goods such as boats, motorcycles and bourbon- the same used in 2018 and 2020, then in response to Trump’s steel and aluminum duties during his first term.
However, US customs are more powerful now than they were then, therefore the EU intends to introduce additional countermeasures to ensure that the total value of the countermeasures corresponds to the US.
The reintroduced countermeasures will take effect on April 1.
Trump has now stated in a statement on Truth Social that the United States will impose 200 percent tariffs on “all wines, champagne and alcoholic beverages coming from France or any other EU country” about the 50 % customs on US whiskey does not disappear.
“This will be great for wine and champagne operations in the United States,” he writes.
