The call: Let the reindeer be the rescue if the war comes

During the Ubmejen Biejvieh last week, a food conference was also organized. There, among other things, Sami food producers and representatives of municipalities and regions met.

During one of the conversations during the day, crisis preparedness was discussed. Even in war and major crises, care and care need access to food. However, how it should be delivered in a major crisis is unclear in many municipalities.

“A sensible perspective”

From the reindeer industry, there have long been proposals to let the Sami villages be part of the crisis preparedness. Vilhelmina Municipality snapped on the last year and signed an agreement with the Sami villages Vilhelmina Norra and Södra.

Nils Johan Labba, in the Sami Parliament’s Nutrition Board, now hopes that several municipalities will go that way.

– A sensible perspective is that the reindeer meat should be a huge part of Norrbotten and Västerbotten’s inland crisis preparedness. There this food is easily accessible, he says.

He notes that although the reindeer industry is not the largest meat producer in the country, it is in several parts of Västerbotten and Norrbotten’s inland.

“Must go fast”

He is supported by Annelie Grip Hansson, county veterinarian in Västerbotten. She too sees the benefits of looking closer at making the reindeer industry some of the crisis preparedness.

– Food preparedness is quite weak in our county and we need to take advantage of the resources we have here and it must go pretty fast, says Annelie Grip Hansson, county veterinarian in Västerbotten.
