Criminal gangs lurk young Chinese into traps – forced to commit fraud

Last week, over a thousand people have been rescued from the fraud in Myanmar. They have been tricked there by criminal networks and are forced to carry out telephone fraud. Many people say they have been exposed to trafficking.

Li Hanxiang describes for SVT’s asian correspondent Tilde Lewin a hopeless fight:

– We Chinese are not worth anything there and the Chinese police cannot help us either. Even if we make a police report.

The fraud centers are located in areas controlled by the junta where civil war is ongoing. Despite pressure from China, the police only manage to shut down part of the business.

Detached for gold shops

China, Myanmar and Thailand have recently collaborated to stop fraud centers that have deceived many billions of victims through, among other things, false investment arrangements and romantic arrangements.

Hundreds of thousands of people from Southeast Asia are estimated to have worked at similar activities in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. Many of them have been recruited under false predictions about other jobs.

According to Li Hanxiang, her son fell for the gang’s promises, which turned out to be lies:

– My child was deceived on December 28. They said he would go and pick up gold and give him 15,000.
