Google upsets the results of its search engine with its new AI mode, which answers questions by mixing several sources thanks to Gemini 2.0. What deeply upset the Internet ecosystem.

The launch of Chatgpt at the end of 2022 completely upset the technology sector. All companies are betting on it to gain popularity and integrate it into their devices and services. Google, so far the undisputed master of artificial intelligence, was quick to follow the step with Gemini. The company is gradually incorporating its AI into all its services: in Google Messages, in Google Maps, in Gmail, in Chrome, in Translation … Its famous search engine, which occupies 90 % of the sector’s market share, does not cut it.

The Mountain View firm had notably deployed all over the world, except in Europe-because of the constraints of Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the other regulations on copyright-AI Overviews (IA saw in French), a generative AI function producing a small summary of research results directly above these (see our article). As she announces in A blog postshe gives a layer with the deployment of Gemini 2.0, as well as a “IA mode”. A counterattack barely hidden in front of Searchgpt d’Opnai and Perplexity.

IA mode: goodbye classic search results, hello gemini

Google has announced the launch of Gemini 2.0, its second-generation AI model and the most evolved to date, for AI Overviews in the United States. It turns out to be better than its predecessor in many areas, whether in terms of performance and latency, to understand language, generate text or perform tasks (translation, summaries, etc.). It will therefore be able to provide more complex responses, especially in terms of code, mathematical operations or multimodal requests – they can contain both text, audio and video.

Another novelty, IA mode, also appears to the left of the tabs, images and news – just to not miss it. He will offer more complete and further advanced responses.“This new research mode widens what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning”rejoices Google. It is based on a personalized version of Gemini 2.0 and a technique called “query fan-out“(” Vetches of requests “in French).

To put it simply, the AI launches several research in parallel on different sub-themes, then summarize all this information in the form of a detailed article, before listing its sources, by displaying the websites which served it in a column on the right. It is then possible to ask questions about the results to go further, as in a conversation.

For the moment, this tool is only experimentally deployed from a limited number of users, upon registration. Only Google One Ai Premium subscribers living in the United States can try it. A way to avoid too many slippages on the part of the AI - we remember the beginnings of Ai Overviews, which advised to eat small pebbles or to put glue in pizza sauce – and to measure the negative benefits on the traffic of websites, which largely depend on Google search results.
