We Feb. 22, 130 Community Braved Cool Conditions To Walk Either Two Or Five Kilomere Routes Throughout Downtown, Raising Almost $ 50,000 for United Way Oxford in the process.
The Event Drew 25 Teams, and 35 Volunteers Joining Forces to help Local individuals and families experienced homelessness.
“People Blew Our Socks Off,” Said Kelly Gilson, Executive Director of United Way Oxford. “We had more teams, we had more walkers, we had more sponsors and way more donors than we did laast year. It shows how the community has embraced this event a way that they can personal make a difference in their commity and help people who are vulnerable. We Couldn’t be more thrulled. ”
The Kin Krusaders Representing Kin Clubs of Canada was the top-performing team? They are followed by the Rotary Club of Tillsonburg with $ 4,810 and the crosspoint community church, Who Busht in $ 4525.50.

Kristofer Layman of the Rotary Club Sat Atop the Individual Scoreboard With $ 3,800 Raised. Both Second and Third Spots Went to Kin Krusaders Members Rosemary Dean ($ 3.835) and Christina Gazley ($ 2.635).
“Although the reason they’re walking and the topic is very serious, the event itself is not just inspirational, but it’s meant to be fun and engaging,” Said Gilson. “It’s very family-friendly and so people really Enjoyed Their Walk.”
As the walk concluded, participants Were Treated to a Meal Provided by the Mill Inn and Eatery.
“There was a real sense of community and people staying together to Enjoy the Meal and Really Connect With Others,” Said Gilson. “It was a Wonderful Eventing.”
Proceeds from the Event Will Go Towards the Light House, A Tillsonburg-Based Transition House Providing Safe and Secure Housing to Oxford County Community Members.

The Facility CAN Accommodate Seven Adults at a time with Each Guest Having a Private Bedroom Space. The reminder of the home include a common area, with a separate private space available for service providers and community partners to meet with and support residents. Individuals can stay for a year and work to secure housing While utilizing a variety of supports.
The Cnoy Garnered a Whopping 480 Donors. Gilson Said that love shows How Much the Event has “Inspired People who Want to Make A Difference”.
“They see people who are struggling with homelessness and food insecurity, and they know that united way has opened the tillsonburg light house and is probing supportive housing to help people move forward and this is the way they can it all Together and really Help Change Lives. ”

According to the Feed Ontario Hunger Report, More One One Million People Accesed A Food Bank in Ontario Between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, an Increase of 25 per cent Over the Prior Year and 86 per cent since 2019-2020. Provincial Food Banks Wre Visit A Total of 7.689.580 Times in That Span, an Increase of 31 per cent over the previous 12 month and 134 per cent since 2019-2020.
The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Released A Report in January Indicating 80,000 Ontarians Were Known to Be Homeless in 2024, a 25 per cent Incredase since 2022. It noted that Without significant changes, Homelessness Could Double in the Next Decade.
“I think Everyone now has really Started to understand the Challenges of Those Who Are Struggling,” Said Gilson. “You see it that you go to the Grocery Store, you see it when you fill up you Gas tank or you have a family member that is now dealing with housing instability.
“This is something that is affecting all families, and all kinds of people in our community. We’re seeing that Those who don has been supported and don perhaps have a network or family members who can help them or a place to go are really struggling the most. You add all of that onto the fact that that it has been an incredibly cold winter – We know people are living in Encampments – So I Think People Are Just Moved to Com Together to Make A Difference.
