Diabetics who have the insulin pump minimed from meditronic with them on the flight can inadvertently get the wrong dose of their medicine. The company now expires with a security warning.

According to the company meditronic, too much insulin can be dosed in connection with air start – which could lead to low blood sugar, writes the Medical Journal. In connection with landing, it can instead be dosed for little insulin which can lead to high blood sugar.

This applies to different insulin pumps all named Minimed.

In total, 138 reports have been received, of which 19 on serious injuries, which have a possible connection to the problem.

Medtronic urges patients to control their glucose values often in connection with flight, and to be prepared to treat any ups or downs in blood sugar.

According to Jarl Hellman, chairman of the Swedish Association for Diabetology, it is not only the insulin pump minimed that can dose errors in the air.

“Extra observance when flying applies to all pumps,” he writes in an email to the Medical Journal.
