The fish can find the fish lift through a bait current. They are used to swimming upstream, to get to places to spawn. When they follow the Lokstroom, they come into the elevator, which automatically recognizes that a fish is at the door. In the elevator the water level goes to the right level, and then the fish can continue swimming again.
