The final document, which several media has taken part in, shows that together they should extract minerals, oil and gas in Ukraine. Negotiations must have loosened since the United States released its claim for the right to $ 500 billion in revenue from the assets.
The US and Ukraine have not yet officially commented on the message through their own channels.
It should have been agreed to establish a fund to which Ukraine will contribute 50 percent of the proceeds from “future monetarization” of the state assets. The fund will then be used to invest in Ukraine.
The agreement does not cover the resources already used by Ukraine. However, the document states nothing about security guarantees.
The details of the agreement, including the US shares in the fund and the conditions for joint ownership, will be handled at a later date, writes the Financial Times that took part in the document.
The road lined with noise
Already in the autumn, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj opened in his victory plane to share Ukraine’s natural resources with its western allies. Since then, the tours around the agreement have been lined with a bad mood between Ukraine and the United States.
The Ukrainian government has been clear that a prerequisite for an agreement is to be given clear security guarantees in exchange. Zelenskyj must have been angry when, at a meeting in Kiev with Scott Bessent, the US Finance Minister, on February 12, it must have been asked to sign an agreement on the minerals on the spot but which did not contain any security guarantees.
President Donald Trump should then have said that Bessent was treated “rude” by Ukraine and also claimed that Zelenskyj slept when the minister arrived.
The agreement will then gradually changed form and thus finally been accepted by Ukraine.
Unclear when to be signed
Ukraine’s presidential office is currently preparing a meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyj and US Donald Trump, says sources for multiple media.
According to the data, the two presidents will, under ceremonial forms, sign the mineral agreement that the United States and Ukraine have now agreed.
But exactly when is still unclear. Reuters and AFP write that the meeting is likely to take place on Friday, while the Financial Times reports that the signing will take place within the next few weeks.
